Jewish Family Services (JFS) of Northeastern NY is seeking an engaging, compassionate, self-motivated and highly organized individual to serve New York’s Capital Region community.

This role is a mix of serving as in-house chaplain in a senior continuum of care community (50%), and regional Jewish clinical pastoral care specialist (50%) 

We welcome individuals with a true passion for providing service to the Jewish community in some of the most sensitive times of need. The Chaplain will support with integrity, empathy, and maturity, and maintain strict confidentiality. 

Responsibilities: 

  • Serve as the in-house Chaplain for Daughters of Sarah Community for Seniors: 
    • Provide pastoral care and counseling for residents of the Nursing & Rehabilitation Center and The Massry Assisted Living Center 
    • Partner with other community clergy (both Jewish and non-Jewish) to address resident needs 
    • Coordinate and conduct religious services for each Shabbat, and all Jewish Holidays and celebrations 
    • Advise Activities, Dietary, and Social Service Departments on Jewish Holiday traditions and serve as a resource to address Jewish observance questions (other than supervising Kashrut) 
    • Provide programming on Jewish topics for residents 
    • Perform in-house funerals at Daughters of Sarah, as requested 
  • Serve as community-wide chaplain for Jewish residents in other long-term care facilities, and for JFS clients: 
    • Provide pastoral care and Jewish education for residents 
    • Serve as Jewish resource for facility staff 
    • Consult with community clergy to ensure residents and families in long-term care are supported
  • Train and manage community volunteers who offer Jewish holiday and cultural activities 
  • Collaborate with Jewish and non-Jewish community professionals and volunteers to promote understanding and appreciation and innovations for Jewish pastoral care 
  • Serve on related committees;  attend staff and other community functions and meetings 
  • Officiate occasional community funerals and shivas 
  • Record all interactions in agency database. maintain compliance with HIPAA 
  • Collaborate with professional and lay volunteers to fundraise on behalf of the program 
  • Refer individuals to internal JFS programs or services  
  • Act as primary Jewish resource for JFS staff              

Qualifications: 

  • Minimum of one unit of clinical pastoral education and commitment to pursue additional units 
  • Rabbinical ordination or equivalent experience. Other degrees are considered, including master’s degree from an accredited institution in Theology, Pastoral Care, Judaism, and/or Social Work 
  • Minimum of 1-3 years’ experience in chaplaincy or pastoral care, preferably in a healthcare setting
  • Affiliation with NAJC: Neshama Association of Jewish Chaplains within first year of employment 
  • End-of-life expertise is preferred 
  • Understanding of family dynamics, issues related to chronic disease management and emotional health, death and dying. 
  • Able to work in a collaborative team relationship. 
  • Able to perform public speaking engagements and lead weekly Shabbat and memorial services 
  • Able to work flexible hours, including potential for some evenings and weekends 
  • Able to work remotely 
  • Valid driver’s license 
  • Access to reliable transportation for local travel 

Salary Range 

$73,000 – $88,000, with benefits
