Jewish Community Chaplain

Full Time Position:
in-house chaplain in senior continuum of care community (50%) and
regional Jewish clinical pastoral care specialist (50%)

Overview:
Seeking an engaging, compassionate, self-motivated and highly organized individual to serve Capital Region community. Chaplain is expected to carry themself with integrity and maturity and maintain strict confidentiality. Must have  passion for serving the Jewish community in some of the most sensitive times of need and be a true people person.

Responsibilities include:

  • Serving as the in-house Chaplain for Daughters of Sarah Community for Seniors:
    • Providing pastoral care and counseling for residents of the Nursing & Rehabilitation Center and The Massry Assisted Living Center.
    • Liaising as needed with other community clergy (both Jewish and non-Jewish) to address resident needs.
    • Coordinating and conducting religious services for each Shabbat, and all Jewish Holidays and celebrations.
    • Advising Activities, Dietary, and Social Service Departments on Jewish Holiday traditions and serve as a resource to address Jewish observance questions (other than supervising Kashrut).
    • Providing programing on Jewish topics for residents, as requested.
    • Performing in-house funerals at Daughters of Sarah, as requested.
  • Serving as community-wide chaplain for Jewish residents in other long-term care facilities, and JFS
    clients as appropriate and needed:

    • Providing pastoral care and Jewish education for residents
    • Serving as Jewish resource for facility staff, including coordination and distribution of Jewish holiday newsletter and similar communications
    • Liaising with community clergy to ensure residents and families in long-term care supported.
  • Training and managing community volunteers who offer Jewish holiday and cultural activities.
  • Collaborate with Jewish and non-Jewish community professionals and volunteers to promote understanding and appreciation and innovations for Jewish pastoral care.
  • Serve on related committees. attend staff and other community functions and meetings.
  • Officiate occasional community funerals and shivas, as needed and agreed to.
  • Record all interactions in agency database. maintain compliance with HIPAA.
  • Collaborate with professional and lay volunteers to fundraise on behalf of the program.
  • Refer individuals to internal JFS programs or services as needed and appropriate.
  • Serve as primary Jewish resource for JFS staff.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum of one unit of clinical pastoral education and commitment to pursue additional units.
  • Rabbinical ordination or equivalent experience. Other degrees considered, including master’s degree from an accredited institution in Theology, Pastoral Care, Judaism and/or Social Work.
  • Minimum of 1-3 years of experience in chaplaincy or pastoral experience, preferably in healthcare setting
  • Affiliation with NAJC: Neshama Association of Jewish Chaplains within first year of employment
  • End-of-life expertise is preferred.
  • Understanding of family dynamics. issues related to chronic disease management and emotional health. death and dying.
  • Able to work in a collaborative team relationship.
  • Able to perform public speaking engagements and lead weekly Shabbat and memorial services, as needed
  • Able to work flexible hours, including potential for some evenings and weekends
  • Able to work remotely
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Own or have access to a reliable car.
Salary Range: $73,000 – $88,000, with benefits
