News

Hearing is essential. We take it for granted until we have trouble communicating. It is important for a sense of safety, awareness, good healthy cognition, and of course, for socialization and communication.
Three in ten people over the age of 60 have hearing loss, and one in two over the age of 75. We all deal with hearing loss, sometimes our own or the people in our lives.

This NNORC Breakfast Club will provide an explanation of hearing loss—different types and levels. We will cover the consequences of not treating hearing loss and what we can do to maintain good hearing! We will also discuss tips for good communication.

Our presenter is Debra Trees who is an audiologist at St. Peter’s Hospital where she has worked for the past 33 years. As a Doctor of Audiology, she provides hearing health in the form of diagnostic testing and treatment to people of all ages and with all types of hearing issues.

Please join us on Wednesday, September 11 at 9:30 a.m. at the Albany Jewish Community Center (340 Whitehall Road, Albany). Please call NNORC at 518-514-2023 to reserve your bagel and your seat!

There is no NNORC Breakfast Club in October. Please save November 13 for the next NNORC Breakfast Club.

Save Wednesday, September 11 for the next NNORC Breakfast Club when we welcome Debra Trees, Au.D. from St. Peter’s Hospital, who will discuss “Hearing as We Age and Ways to Protect Our Hearing.”

Mother Nature is still cooperating, so let’s get in one more walk around the pond! Come and enjoy a leisurely walk on Thursday, November 14 (rain date: 11/21), followed by refreshments and conversation.  We will gather at the Berkshire Boulevard parking lot (at the juncture of Colonial Avenue) at 9:45 a.m., with the plan to hit the trail at 10:00 a.m. sharp.

Please call NNORC at 518-514-2023 to register and to let us know if you need help arranging transportation to the site.  Plan to wear sensible shoes and comfortable, weather-appropriate clothing.

Singer-songwriter-educator Ruth Pelham will be our special guest as we celebrate Older Americans’ Month in May. The 2019 theme is “Connect, Create, Contribute.” With the spirit of warmth and enthusiasm that for decades has been a steady mark of her artistry, Ruth will lead us in a lively conversation and invite us to sing along with her original songs and participate in a  hands-on activity.

Ruth really looks forward to leading our annual Older Americans’ Month celebration. “Every time I’m with the NNORC community, I’m touched by the group’s kindness, support, and genuine camaraderie. I’m delighted to again sing my songs with such a vibrant and welcoming circle of seniors,” she said. Ruth lives in the Albany NNORC, where, since 1977, she has been the founder and director of The Music Mobile whose concerts, residencies, workshops, special initiatives, and international cultural exchange projects have impacted the lives of generations of Capital Region residents.

Let’s “Go Green” and learn how to make reusable storage sheets. Made with cotton fabric and natural beeswax, these sheets can be molded to any shape using the natural warmth of your hands. Once used, simply wash the storage sheet with dish detergent, rinse, reshape and reuse. Enjoy making  and using these pretty and environmentally friendly alternatives to plastic wrap or foil.

That means more seniors, over 4,000 in this three-square mile area of Albany, can take advantage of the programs and support services available in their neighborhood retirement community!

Here is a map of the Albany NNORC:

The primary goal of the Albany NNORC is to help seniors over 60 you live in their homes as long as possible. Most of the seniors in this unique area have lived in their homes for over 25 years. Clearly, they love your home and their neighborhood!
The New York State Office for the Aging is invested in helping seniors “age in place.” They provide funding so that Jewish Family Services (the lead agency) and several community partners can help you stay in your community. As a resident of the Albany NNORC, seniors have access to educational workshops, health and wellness programs, social outings and day trips, home visits with the NNORC nurse and case manager, and more. Most everything we provide is close to home, right in their neighborhood.

We’re paving the way to make connections with neighbors! Check out this issue of the NNORC News and see what’s available. It’s chock-full of activities, workshops and wellness programs. And it’s like this every month! We’re even planning a few summer day trips. Next month, Mayor Kathy Sheehan will speak at the monthly NNORC Breakfast Club.

To our new NNORC residents: Welcome! We hope to meet you at our upcoming programs. If you want to see what we’ve been up to, visit us on Facebook at Albany NNORC. We’ve just posted our year-in-review photo album so you can see what fun your neighbors have been doing. Plus, our calendar and more information about the Albany NNORC is online. We hope to see you at an upcoming NNORC event!

Chi Gong is a 5,000-year-old practice that can empower us to become active participants in our own physical, mental and emotional healing.  Through gentle movements, meditation, visualization, energy and breath work, this six-week class can help relieve aches and pains; provide gentle, quiet grounding and inner peace for those with depression, anxiety or panic attacks; and bring relief, calm and a sense of well-being

No previous experience or special props are needed. All physical abilities and limitations are welcome.  The practice can be done seated or with a chair for support. Wear clothing that allows for comfortable movement. The series is led by Oded Ben-Ami, a certified Chi Gong teacher.
