For several years, NNORC has offered the CarFit program and the response has been amazing. CarFit is an educational program that offers older adults the opportunity to check how well their personal vehicles “fit” them. The program also provides information and materials on community-specific resources that could enhance their safety as drivers, and/or increase their mobility in the community.
Older drivers are more likely to wear their seatbelts, and less likely to speed or drink and drive. However, older drivers are more likely to be killed or seriously injured when a crash does occur due to the greater fragility of their aging bodies. While driver safety programs help protect older drivers by addressing cognitive abilities and skills, older drivers can also improve their safety by ensuring their cars are properly adjusted for them. A proper fit in one’s car can greatly increase not only the driver’s safety but also the well-being of others.
This fall we will once again offer CarFit. The program will take place on Thursday, October 4 from 10:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m.  in the parking lot of St. Sophia’s Greek Orthodox Church (440 Whitehall Rd, Albany). Trained screeners will help you fit better in your car, with the ultimate goal of helping you reduce the potential for injuries or crashes.  This program is led by Roger Dames, who serves as the Driver Fitness Center Coordinator at Colonie Senior Services.
The evaluation takes 30 minutes while you are seated in your car. The screening looks at various factors including safety belt use, steering wheel tilt, head rest setting, body positioning to air bag, line of sight over steering wheel, body positioning to accelerator and brake pedals and mirror adjustment. Appointments are required, so please call the NNORC at 518-514-2023 to make your appointment.

Save the date for lunch and a movie! NNORC will be having lunch, followed by the movie, The Darkest Hour.
Movie Synopsis: During the early days of World War II, with the fall of France imminent, Britain faces its darkest hour as the threat of invasion looms. The Darkest Hour stars Gary Oldman as Winston Churchill, and is an account of his early days as Prime Minister.  It was nominated for Best Picture and Oldham won the Academy Award for Best Actor.
Lunch will be ordered from Cardona’s. Please choose chicken parmesan or eggplant parmesan. The cost is $13 for members or $15 non-members and includes salad, pasta and dessert. Please make your reservation with NNORC by Tuesday, October 30 at 518-514-2023.
Food and Flicks is on Thursday, November 1 at 12:00 p.m. at Congregation Beth Emeth, 100 Academy Rd, Albany. Lunch is at 12:00 p.m. and the movie will follow.

The June CDTA program was so successful that we’re taking it to the next level—learning how to use the bus system! Join us Thursday, September 13 at 11:00 a.m. We will be taking the bus from St. Sophia’s Greek Orthodox Church to Capital Rep in downtown Albany, and then back. You’ll be able to learn now to use the Navigator card (if you have one) and where you can go along the route downtown!
Oni Cedeno, CDTA Travel Trainer, will accompany us for this sample bus run. Travel training is available for residents to learn how to travel using CDTA’s public transit route. Park you car at St. Sophia’s. We will board the bus near their parking lot entrance (440 Whitehall Rd, Albany). Please bring $ 0.75 for each way ($1.50 total in change).  The trip takes roughly 25 minutes (50 minutes round trip). Buses are air-conditioned, but please bring a light jacket or water if needed.
Please call NNORC to register at 518-514-2023.
