How about an up close and personal discussion with our mayor? Join us for the June NNORC Breakfast Club as we welcome Mayor Kathy Sheehan. Mayor Sheehan is a strong supporter of the Albany NNORC. She recognizes the value for seniors remaining in their own homes as they age. She will discuss transformative developments that are helping to make every Albany neighborhood work. Her presentation will touch on how the first rezoning of the City in more than half a century is enabling residents to age in place, as well as City grant programs designed

Votes for Women celebrates the centennial of women’s suffrage in New York State.  The exhibit raises public awareness of the struggle for women’s suffrage and equal rights in New York from the 1848 Seneca Falls Convention through 1917 when New York granted women the right to vote. The exhibition also addresses the nationally significant role of New York State leaders regarding women’s rights and the feminist movement through the early 21st century.

Ever hear of a Sewing Bee? It’s an informal social gathering based on an activity like sewing or quilting. Your Albany NNORC is hosting a MoonCatcher Bee.
The MoonCatcher Project provides reusable, washable, menstrual pads (aka “mooncatchers”) that can be worn by girls in the poorest communities worldwide. Educating girls in developing countries is the most effective means of improving their lives and fostering economic development. However, many girls in developing countries often drop out of school when they reach puberty because they have no access to feminine hygiene products. These pads make going to school while menstruating possible, which helps keep girls in school.
Join us for the NNORC MoonCatcher “Bee,” where we’ll gather to sew, cut, iron, and assemble MoonCatchers—washable pads made of flannel, waterproof Tyvek and highly absorbent and soft bamboo fleece fabric. Everyone—men, women and children—are welcome. No sewing skills are required. If you have a ruler, scissors, a portable sewing machine, an iron or small ironing board—bring them along, though this is not necessary. All the materials are provided by the MoonCatcher Project.

Retirement is a major life transition, sometimes described as becoming “unmoored from our normal structures.” Some may find this freedom delightful; others may feel at sea. For all of us, new rhythms and spaces emerge. Taking time to pause, contemplate, listen, and share can enrich this time of life.
Join Audrey Seidman, a spiritual director, a Sage-ing® Mentor, to explore the “Shalom” of retirement in a contemplative and supportive circle. This program is highly participatory, inviting deep listening and personal sharing, as well as discernment of what brings us closer to the Sacred.
Due to the nature of the group, participants are strongly encouraged to participate in all four sessions.

Show your heart a little extra TLC this February.  Small lifestyle changes can yield big benefits that will keep that vital organ healthy and happy.
Get Physical: Make a plan to include some physical activity each and every day.  Don’t worry about going to a gym—even 10 minutes of movement several times a day helps.  Take a walk around the block, or even up and down the aisles of the grocery store. The NNORC also offers your choice of two yoga classes each week.  Good exercise and great for stress management!
Take a Snooze:  Lack of sleep can be associated with high cholesterol and blood pressure.  Adults need 7-9 hours each night for good health. To recharge your physical and mental batteries, develop a bedtime routine to help yourself fall asleep and stay asleep
Shape Up Your Recipes:  Give your favorite recipes a makeover by reducing salt and saturated fats.  For example, substitute low-fat yogurt for sour cream, explore taste-enhancing herbs and spices instead of salt.
Feeling the Pressure:  Nearly 1 in 3 adults have high blood pressure, and more than half of them don’t have it under control.  Self-monitor your pressure and know your numbers.  Normal blood pressure greatly reduces your risk for heart attack or stroke.  If those numbers are high talk with your health care provider.
Play Together:  Spending time with family, friends and pets can help reduce stress and contribute to heart health.  Pursue hobbies that interest you and give you pleasure—invite a friend to join you.
