Older drivers are more likely to wear their seat belts, and less likely to speed or drink and drive. However older drivers are more likely to be killed or seriously injured when a crash does occur due to the greater fragility of their aging bodies. While driver safety programs improve safety for older drivers by addressing cognitive abilities and skills, older drivers can also improve their safety by ensuring their cars are properly adjusted for them. A proper fit in one’s car can greatly increase not only the driver’s safety, but also the safety of others.
For several years, NNORC has offered the CarFit program and the positive response has been amazing. CarFit is an educational program that offers older adults the opportunity to check how well their personal vehicles “fit” them. The program also provides information and materials on community specific resources that could enhance their safety as drivers, and/or increase their mobility in the community. The evaluation takes only 30 minutes while you are seated in your car. The screening looks at various factors including safety belt use, steering wheel tilt, head rest setting, body positioning, to gas and break pedals and mirror adjustment.
This program is sponsored by the Colonie Senior Service Center-Driver Fitness Center.

The Albany NNORC is collaborating with Price Chopper Pharmacists to offer seniors a flu shot clinic. Price Chopper carries the quadrivalent vaccine, which covers four strains of the flu instead of just three. They also offer a high dose shot that provides better protection for seniors. Flu shots are covered by Medicare and most insurance plans. Bring your Medicare Part B card and your prescription drug card. Questions about individual coverage cab be answered by Price Chopper Pharmacists.

Hearing and Communication: How it Affects Your Life
Good hearing is essential for being active in your life. Even if you don’t have a hearing loss, many of the people around you may have trouble hearing clearly. This can cause some funny and sometimes difficult situations.
In this month’s NNORC Breakfast Club, we will cover what a hearing loss really means, learn about the prevalence of hearing loss, and discuss ways that we all can communicate better in our everyday lives.
Our presenter is Debra E. Trees, Au.D., who is an Audiology Supervisor at St. Peter’s Hospital for 29 years. Debra currently serves as a member of the Capital Area Speech and Healing Association, the NYS Speech, Language and Hearing Association, and the American Speech-Language Hearing Association. In 2012, she was recognized as a Distinguished Alumni of The College of St. Rose in 2012 and she mentors graduate interns in their Communication Disorders Program. Debra has published research and descriptive articles and is currently working on publication of an online continuing education program about hearing loss for nurses.
The program will be held on Wednesday, September 14 from 9:30-1100 a.m. at Albany JCC (340 Whitehall Road, Albany).
Be sure to call 514-2023 to reserve your seat and your bagel.
Save October 19th when Mary Brummagyn, SPRN, will discuss immunizations for seniors, new pneumonia recommendations and recent trends in public health concerns. There will also be an opportunity for flu immunizations from the Price Chopper Pharmacy team after the October 19 breakfast club presentation at St. Sophia’s Greek Orthodox Church. Come and See Bridge of Spies
Bridge of Spies is a 2015 historical drama legal thriller film directed and co-produced by Steven Spielberg, co-produced by Marc E. Platt and Kristie Macosko Krieger. The film stars Tom Hanks, Mark Rylance, Amy Ryan, and Alan Alda. Based on the 1960 U-2 incident during the Cold War, the film tells the story of lawyer James B. Donovan, who is entrusted with negotiating the release of Francis Gary Powers—a pilot whose U-2 spy plane was shot down over the Soviet Union—in exchange for Rudolf Abel, a captive and convicted Soviet KGB spy, whom he represented at trial. The name of the film refers to the Glienicke Bridge, which connects Potsdam with Berlin, where the spy exchange took place.
Join us on Thursday, September 29 at 3:00 p.m. at St. Sophia’s (440 Whitehall Rd, Albany) for the movie, followed by dinner. We’re bringing in food from Sam’s. Choose eggplant parmesan or chicken parmesan.  The cost is $12 for members and $14 for non-members. RSVP with NNORC at 514-2023.
