Hearing and Communication: How it Affects Your Life
Good hearing is essential for being active in your life. Even if you don’t have a hearing loss, many of the people around you may have trouble hearing clearly. This can cause some funny and sometimes difficult situations.
In this month’s NNORC Breakfast Club, we will cover what a hearing loss really means, learn about the prevalence of hearing loss, and discuss ways that we all can communicate better in our everyday lives.
Our presenter is Debra E. Trees, Au.D., who is an Audiology Supervisor at St. Peter’s Hospital for 29 years. Debra currently serves as a member of the Capital Area Speech and Healing Association, the NYS Speech, Language and Hearing Association, and the American Speech-Language Hearing Association. In 2012, she was recognized as a Distinguished Alumni of The College of St. Rose in 2012 and she mentors graduate interns in their Communication Disorders Program. Debra has published research and descriptive articles and is currently working on publication of an online continuing education program about hearing loss for nurses.
The program will be held on Wednesday, September 14 from 9:30-1100 a.m. at Albany JCC (340 Whitehall Road, Albany).
Be sure to call 514-2023 to reserve your seat and your bagel.
Save October 19th when Mary Brummagyn, SPRN, will discuss immunizations for seniors, new pneumonia recommendations and recent trends in public health concerns. There will also be an opportunity for flu immunizations from the Price Chopper Pharmacy team after the October 19 breakfast club presentation at St. Sophia’s Greek Orthodox Church. (Appointments required. Watch for the October NNORC News for details.)

Come and See Bridge of Spies
Bridge of Spies is a 2015 historical drama legal thriller film directed and co-produced by Steven Spielberg, co-produced by Marc E. Platt and Kristie Macosko Krieger. The film stars Tom Hanks, Mark Rylance, Amy Ryan, and Alan Alda. Based on the 1960 U-2 incident during the Cold War, the film tells the story of lawyer James B. Donovan, who is entrusted with negotiating the release of Francis Gary Powers—a pilot whose U-2 spy plane was shot down over the Soviet Union—in exchange for Rudolf Abel, a captive and convicted Soviet KGB spy, whom he represented at trial. The name of the film refers to the Glienicke Bridge, which connects Potsdam with Berlin, where the spy exchange took place.
Join us on Thursday, September 29 at 3:00 p.m. at St. Sophia’s (440 Whitehall Rd, Albany) for the movie, followed by dinner. We’re bringing in food from Sam’s. Choose eggplant parmesan or chicken parmesan.  The cost is $12 for members and $14 for non-members. RSVP with NNORC at 514-2023.

At this moment, nearly 2.6 million New York residents are caring for an older parent or loved one, helping them to live independently at home. These family caregivers have a huge responsibility, and now there’s support in place that will make life a little bit easier for them.
A new law, the Caregiver Advise, Record,
Enable (CARE) Act
, just went into effect in April 2016, and supports family caregivers when their loved ones go into the hospital and as they transition home. When a patient is admitted, the law now requires hospitals to:

  1. Provide your loved one the opportunity to designate a family caregiver in the medical record
  2. Keep the caregiver informed of their loved one’s discharge plans
  3. Offer the caregiver basic instruction on the aftercare tasks they will be asked to perform at home

This victory will help empower family caregivers to do their best work as they take care of the ones they love. Thank you for helping to put this new law on the books by adding your voice to AARP New York’s advocacy efforts. Together, we are making a difference.

Retirement is a major life transition, sometimes described as becoming “unmoored from our normal structures.” Some may find this freedom delightful; others may feel at sea. For all of us, new rhythms and spaces emerge.
Taking time to pause, contemplate, listen, and share can enrich this time of life. Join Audrey Seidman, a spiritual director, an intern in the ALEPH Sage-ing® Mentorship Program, and a recent retiree from New York State Service, to explore the “Shalom” of retirement in a contemplative and supportive circle. This program is highly participatory, inviting deep listening and personal sharing, as well as discernment of what brings us closer to the Sacred.

Due to extenuating circumstances at the Cornell Cooperative Extension, we are postponing the East Smart for Brain Health session and replacing it with Cooking for One or Two. Those enrolled in the Brain Health session will be automatically registered for Cooking for One or Two. If you would like a refund, please call the NNORC office. We apologize for this inconvenience.
Cooking for one or two can be difficult. Quantities of food are often too big, and items spoil before they are consumed. Plus, many recipes are for at least four serving, which can create a problem for preserving leftovers. All of this can be a real challenge when you are living alone or with one other person.
Join us for a hands-on cooking workshop that addresses these concerns. Learn some easy shopping and preparation tips for putting together affordable, enjoyable meals for one or two people. This program includes cooking and sampling.
