The Albany Neighborhood Naturally Occurring Retirement Community (NNORC), administered by JFS, provides programs and supports for older adults within a specified 3.5 square mile geographic area centered around Temple Israel in Albany (this boundary is determined in partnership with New York State Office for the Aging). The NNORC is built on the premise that older adults who are engaged are more likely to maintain their current lifestyle and will age well and safely in place longer.

The NNORC is more than just a method of service provision. Every day, NNORC staff have meaningful, one-to-one contact with the residents we serve. Through JFS’s 360-degree approach to aging in place, NNORC staff and services make a big impact on someone’s day-to-day life through increasing wellness-focused engagement, ensuring in-home safety, monitoring for changes in health and behaviors and addressing emerging issues before they reach crisis.

This Anniversary Celebration marks a significant milestone of serving older adults in the Capital Region. Residents, NNORC supporters and partners, plus friends of the NNORC will gather to recognize the vital programs and support services provided by JFS staff in this unique neighborhood.

The Albany NNORC is a unique neighborhood where we have been honored to help residents age well and safely in their homes and in their community. From care management to healthcare assistance, and from recreational programs to exercise classes, it has been a pleasure to provide support and opportunities for connection to our neighborhood. I am ever in awe of NNORC residents, their resilience, and their commitments to their neighbors’ well-being. Being able to watch friendships develop and our community thrive are the greatest perks of my job!

I learned about the NNORC when I saw an announcement about a chair yoga class, and I thought “I can do that”.   That decision introduced me to a new community.  I have participated in too many programs to count – Let’s Talk Albany, Breakfast Club, Book Club, and of course Chair Yoga.  The entire NNORC staff helped me navigate a health issue, answering all my questions, encouraging me, making sure that I had everything I needed, and following up on my progress.  I am very fortunate and thankful being a resident of the Albany NNORC.

As a recent widow when I moved to Albany 4 years ago, the NNORC has been a wonderful key to unlocking my new life.  From social programs that connect me with neighbors, to health and safety seminars and services that keep me safe in my home and ‘hold my hand’ through health questions, the book club and speakers and virtual travel programs, the NNORC helps me challenge myself to live my best life.
