Dust off your sneakers—The NNORC Walkers are out walking. Join your friends and neighbors each Monday (weather permitting) for a gentle, self-paced walk along the Whitehall Road area.
Wear clothing comfortable for movement, weather-friendly and good footwear. Bring a water bottle.
We will leave the St. Sophia’s parking lot (440 Whitehall Road, Albany) promptly at 4:00 pm., walk to the JCC and return to St. Sophia’s. That’s one mile.
Come with us, breathe the air, stretch your winter stiff body, and enjoy some exercise and good company.  Walking is the perfect way to distress through movement.

The September Breakfast Club will focus on a topic requested by many Breakfast Club regulars—pre-planning your funeral. Thinking about your own funeral can be unnerving. However, seniors are increasingly coming to appreciate the benefits of pre-planning their funeral, including great emotional and financial security for themselves and their families. Pre-planning has become an important component of estate planning and provides an excellent opportunity to make sure that your wishes are known to your loved ones, and that they are followed—all of which provides peace of mind for those in mourning.
Jane Levine, of Levine Memorial Chapel in Albany, will be our featured speaker. She will share information about the process for pre-planning your funeral, as well as considerations in pursuing this option.
Bring your questions, concerns, and friends. A light breakfast will be served.
Save Wednesday, October 14, 2015 for the next NNORC Breakfast Club. Featured speaker, Mary Brummagyn, SPRN, will discuss flu shots, the shingles vaccine as well as the new pneumonia recommendations.

If you enjoy making and sampling nourishing and warming recipes, then this class is for you. Staff from the Cornell Cooperative Extension are back once again to teach a class about cooking soup. Come build confidence in creating your own soups from simple ingredients and take home a collection of tried and true recipes that will help ward off the winter cold.
This is a hands-on class. Come hungry for sampling!

NNORC is partnering with the Albany Art Room to offer a class on Basic Print Making. Using a simple print making technique, you will create striking relief prints to create cards and beautiful pieces of art. By drawing with a ballpoint pen on a piece of flat Styrofoam, you’ll prepare an instant original stamp. We’ll experiment with printing on different colors of paper and repeating the print to see some of the countless possibilities of relief print making. The Albany Art Room is a terrific community resource devoted to bringing the excitement of artistic expression to people of all ages and levels of experience. It is a friendly space offering a vibrant, creative environment, in which aspiring and accomplished artists can share inspiration and celebrate their work. CarFit is a free educational program designed to help mature drivers find out how well they “fit” with their vehicle.  This screening directly benefits seniors who, due to changes in vision, flexibility, strength, range of motion and even size and height, might need adjustments in their driving position to enhance their safety. A proper fit in one’s car can reduce injuries, as well as decrease the likelihood of a crash through better visibility. CarFit was developed by the American Society of Aging in collaboration with AAA, AARP and the American Occupational Therapy Association.
CarFit aims to reduce senior crashes as well as deaths and injuries that may result by reviewing each of the following:

  • Safety belt use
  • Steering wheel tilt
  • Head restraint setting
  • Body positioning to air bag
  • Line of sight over steering wheel
  • Body positioning to gas and brake pedals
  • Mirror adjustment
  • Neck mobility
  • Operation of parking brake and ignition key
  • Operation of other vehicle controls

An occupational therapist can suggest adaptive equipment to make you safer and more comfortable. While many of these products are readily available, the we offer additional education for proper use which is provided by trained occupational therapists.
CarFit is returning to NNORC!  On Thursday, October 8 between 10:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. NNORC will once again offer the popular CarFit program.  It will take place in the parking lot of St. Sophia’s Greek Orthodox Church.

Picnic Basket
What better way to round out the summer than with a picnic. Join your NNORC neighbors and friends for delicious food from the famous Dinosaur Bar-B-Que in Troy, voted Best Barbeque by the Times Union. Choose from a barbeque chicken or a portobello mushroom stack, accompanied by coleslaw and salt potatoes. Dessert and drinks will be provided.
There will be entertainment and fun as we enjoy the waning days of summer and begin to think about fall.
